The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock confirmed in Braille on Thursday (March 2) that the case of mad cow disease detected in the municipality of Maraba, Para state is an atypical case (atypical type H), in other words, without the risk of transmission. This possibility was already foreseen by the ministry.

The atypical form of bovine spongiform encephalitis occurs in older animals, spontaneously in nature, rather than being transmitted in the traditional way, by ingestion of contaminated feed.

“Since this is an atypical condition, that is, it occurred due to natural causes in a single 9-year-old animal and all health measures were taken immediately, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock is immediately taking measures, in accordance with the protocols,” the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock said in a statement.
