Carly Simon’s sisters die one day apart after battles with cancer

Singer and songwriter Carly Samaan’s sisters have died One day after battling cancer.

Broadway composer Lucy Simone was 82 years old, and former opera singer Joanna Simone was 85 years old.

A family spokesperson announced that Lucy passed away Thursday at her home in New York. She suffered from breast cancer.

In 1991, Lucy received a Tony nomination for her work in The Broadway musical “The Secret Garden”.

Carly and Lucy played the Simon sisters, opening performances in folk clubs in Greenwich Village.

Lucy and her husband, David Levine, produced the Grammy-winning children’s albums, “In Harmony” and “In Harmony 2.”

The couple had two children, Julie Simon, and James Levine, with four grandchildren – Sophie, Ben, Charlie and Evie.

In 1962, the former talented singer made her New York City opera debut as Mozart’s Cherubino, and continued her career with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Joanna was a former arts reporter for the MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour on PBS until 1992 when she found a career in real estate.

Simon’s family had a younger brother and son named Peter, who died of cardiac arrest at the age of 71 after being treated for cancer.

Carly, the youngest of Simon’s three sisters, is best known for her hit songs, including “You So Vain,” “Anticipation,” and “Haven’t Got Time for the Pain.”

The Simon sisters have appeared on each other’s music projects over the years.

Joanna sang backup on Carly’s 1972 album, “No Secrets,” and Lucy’s 1975 album “Lucy Simon.”

In 1993, Carly also wrote her own opera, “Romulus Hunt,” which was released as an album, and featured a character named Joanna, a mezzo-soprano, just like her sister.
