The hotels and the local historic theater are undergoing renovation and modernization

While still an attractive walkable village, some of the most historic hotels and the main theater within the village are modernizing their property.
The renovations will preserve the long standing character and charm of the village, while also bringing new life and improvements. Every detail is geared towards enhancing the quality of guests’ time at the popular destination.
Carmel-by-the-Sea properties and renovations include:
Former Carmel Inn
The former Carmel Lodge has been remodeled and is undergoing an extensive renovation to bring the property into the upper echelon of luxury coastal lodges. The hotel, which will be under a new name, is scheduled to reopen in summer 2023. It entails renovation in general, down to the buttons (and beyond), of the hotel’s 42 rooms, public spaces, and infrastructure. The hotel’s facade will also be significantly improved, with the addition of high-quality, energy-efficient windows and doors, custom stonework, and new roofs and porches. There will also be significantly expanded outdoor patio space, including custom-designed fountains and fire pits complemented by electric heaters, as well as new indoor multi-purpose space for small group meetings and similar functions. The hotel’s restaurant has also been completely renovated and is now home to one of Carmel’s most innovative fine dining restaurants, Foray.
La Playa Carmel
One of the most historic estates in Carmel, the “Grand Lady” and known as La Playa Carmel, is undergoing a complete renovation of the entire property – all 75 guest rooms, public areas, furnishings and finishes, addition of HVAC, three new one-bedroom suites and a custom-designed ‘barroom’. While preserving La Playa’s beloved history, the renovation will modernize the guest experience, while continuing to be a resting place for creative minds looking for inspiration. Anchoring Carmel’s finest residential neighborhood, La Playa features more than 6,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event venues and is the premier hotel for meetings, retreats, and social events in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Carmel Beach Hotel
The Carmel Beach Hotel, formerly the Colonial Inn, is undergoing a complete renovation. A haven of peace and serenity since 1925, the hotel is located in the heart of the exclusive “Golden Rectangle” residential neighborhood of Carmel-by-the-Sea. As one of the closest hotels to the ocean, this modern lodging option will provide an elevated guest experience for visitors to Carmel.
Golden Bough Playhouse
