Measles will be very dangerous if complications occur. Severe diarrhea can cause death. The Director of the Immunization Department at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Prima Josephine, MKM What was feared from measles was a complication.
“Complications of measles are generally severe. If measles affects a malnourished child, that child can immediately be accompanied by complications such as severe diarrhea, pneumonia, pneumonia, encephalitis, and inflammation of the lining of the eye that can lead to blindness,” said Dr. Youssef, at a press conference on the progress made in the case of measles, on Friday, said, “This is what worries us.”
In general, the symptoms of measles can include fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes, and then accompanied by the appearance of red spots on the skin. They usually appear two to four days after the initial symptoms.
Measles is caused by the measles virus and is transmitted through droplets or droplets of saliva when you cough, sneeze, or talk, or through nasal secretions. Measles is a highly contagious disease.
Measles can only be prevented through immunization, so immunization should be done according to the schedule so that children are protected from measles. The situation in Indonesia in the past 2 years or approximately 3 years since the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has had adverse effects on immunization coverage.
Immunization coverage has decreased significantly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused many children to not be immunized. Throughout 2022, Indonesia has 12 provinces that have released unusual incident data (KLB).
An area is called an outbreak if there are at least two cases of measles in that area that were tested in a laboratory has been confirmed These cases have an epidemiological relationship.
“During 2022, the number of measles cases in our country was already very large, more than 3,341 case reports. These cases have spread to 223 districts/cities in 31 provinces,” said Dr. Yosevin.
The number of such cases was obtained over the course of one year from January to December 2022. Compared to 2021, there was a significant increase of about 32 times.
The reason is that for two consecutive years, Indonesia has not been able to reach the target for routine immunization services. Many children are not routinely immunized due to COVID-19.
The government is working to strengthen measles and rubella surveillance. Therefore, suspected cases of rubella, that is, patients with fever and rash, should have samples taken and examined in the laboratory.
Therefore, surveillance is strengthened by prompt detection and immediate reporting of suspected rubella cases so that patients can be treated promptly and further investigations can be carried out.
“The government is aiming to eliminate measles and rubella in 2023 as soon as possible. Elimination is a state where we can reduce the number of diseases caused by measles to such an extent that it is definitely a public health problem anymore. But as measles cases increase in our country, it would be a dream to achieve this Elimination is of course somewhat difficult so you can achieve it this year,” said Dr. Youssef.
