Japan sees syphilis cases top 12,000 in 2022

Japan’s National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) reported 12,192 cases of syphilis as of December 14 this year, the highest number of sexually transmitted infections since record-keeping. in OctoberCases have crossed the 10,000 mark.

Tokyo recorded the highest number of cases, with 3,428 cases, followed by Osaka with 1,664 cases, Aichi with 709, and then Hokkaido with 554.

Syphilis was a major problem in Japan until shortly after the end of World War II, but total reported cases fell to several hundred annually until 2011, when a revival began.

Syphilis also increases the risk of contracting HIV, and can cause problems during pregnancy and childbirth in women.
