Representative Eileen Luria, a Democrat on the Jan. 6 committee, cited interviews with law enforcement in describing how Hawley’s salute “provoked a “crowd stir” and made it difficult for officers to protect the complex from the pro-Trump mob.

Shortly after Hawley made the signal, Luria said, barriers on the east side of the Capitol were breached.

“Later that day, Senator Hawley fled after being stormed by protesters he helped stoke the Capitol,” Luria said. She noted that many people saluted them Join the mob after breaking through the barriers.

Footage of Hawley fleeing during the riots sparked fits of laughter in the committee’s session room.

In the aftermath of the riots, Hawley condemned the violence in the Capitol and said he was simply objecting to voters giving a voice to his voters in Missouri, the state that former President Trump won by 15 percentage points in 2020.
