Kazakhstan officials concerned about measles situation

The Ministry of Health is concerned about the complexity of the measles epidemiological situation in Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports.

“Today, we are very concerned about measles. Since the beginning of this year, 56 suspected cases of measles have been registered in Kazakhstan. Of these, 20 cases have been laboratory confirmed in 7 regions, and another 20 are under investigation,” said Deputy. Minister of Health, Chief State Health Physician Aygan Ismagambetova at a press conference at CEC.
Suspected measles cases were recorded in 11 districts, and confirmed today in seven districts.
65% of cases have been registered since the beginning of March. Measles is highly contagious, transmitted by airborne droplets and poses a 100% risk to unvaccinated individuals.”

Measles, caused by a highly contagious virus, is transmitted from person to person through breathing, coughing, or sneezing. Signs and symptoms of measles include a rash, high fever, cough, runny nose or red, watery eyes. People can spread measles up to 4 days before the rash appears and 4 days after. Measles can lead to serious complications, such as pneumonia (inflammation of the lungs), and even death.
