Kia Telluride excellent midsize SUV

The updated Telluride offers solid utility, good performance and handling

Roseville, Calif. — Kia made a great calculation when it decided to make an SUV that’s even bigger than its previous largest model — Sorrento.

Debuting in 2019, the Telluride has been a huge hit for the South Korean automaker. Many expect to call it the loudest three-row mid-size SUV on the market today. The Telluride stands out for its smooth ride quality, roomy interior, and third row that can accommodate adult passengers, which is rare in most SUVs.

2023 Kia Telluride With a few changes, most notably an updated exterior design, new X-Line and X-Pro trim levels, a larger screen, and some additional driver assistance features. It remains a smartly designed SUV that can seat up to eight people and delivers solid utility, good performance and handling.

Since it’s also offered at a reasonably reasonable price, starting at around $35,700, we’re a little surprised that sales haven’t been better. However, sales have been rising steadily – 58,604 (2019), 75,129 (2020), 93,705 (2021) and possibly similar numbers upon the 2022 release.

Different sporty look

Unlike a lot of its competition, the Telluride has a different look. It has a bold, stocky exterior, rare in its class. It also addressed two of the Sorento’s shortcomings—rear passenger space and cargo area. Telluride’s primary competitors are three well-established heavyweights in the midsize class – Toyota HighlanderAnd Honda Pilot And Ford Explorer.

The latest Telluride has five trim levels (LX, S, EX, SX, and SX Prestige). There are also X-Line versions of the EX, SX, and SX Prestige, along with X-Pro versions of the SX and SX-Prestige.

The engine is an efficient 3.8-liter V6 that makes 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. No engine options available. Since fuel economy is a bit low (19-24 mpg), a turbocharged alternative would be welcomed.

The Telluride feels quicker with its 0-60 mph time of 7.5 seconds, average acceleration for a three-row SUV. The front-wheel-drive Telluride can tow up to 5,000 pounds and has all-wheel drive as an available option.

The interior has a design that gives the driver and passengers a lot of comfort. We’re fans of the comfortable captain’s chairs in the second row, which can be swapped for a seat for three. Headroom and legroom are better than average in the first two rows and the third row isn’t just for kids. With all three rows used, the Telluride’s cargo space is 21 cubic feet and expands to 87 with both rows folded down.

the 2023 Kia Telluride A great choice when looking for a mid-size three-row SUV. Telluride is very family friendly, offered at a reasonable price, and attractive inside and out.
