The latest report from the General Directorate of Health Surveillance in Paraguay indicates a steady increase in chikungunya cases.
In the three assessed epidemic weeks (SE1, SE2, SE3) this year, a total of 5,625 cases of chikungunya and 37 of dengue were recorded.
“Looking at the accumulated data for the past three weeks, we have almost 6,000 confirmed cases of this disease and if we look only at the last epidemiological week we have 1,141 cases of chikungunya and 7 of dengue. We probably have a larger record of chikungunya cases, because many of the cases no longer confirm that there are patients at home, or that they have mild symptoms or conditions, ”explained Dr. Guillermo Sequeira.
He also noted that chikungunya cases continue to expand beyond the epicenter, namely the Central Region and Asuncion, to other neighboring departments, such as the Cordillera, Paraguay, Presidente Hayes, Concepción and Alto Paraguay, among others.
“The problem in the metropolitan area, it started in the north, in the cities of Mariano Roque Alonso and Limpio, and then descended to other municipalities. In the metropolitan area, it initially affected neighborhoods such as Zeballos Cue, Botánico, Loma Pytã and Trinidad, and then spread to almost all neighborhoods of Asuncion There is no neighborhood that does not have chikungunya,” he noted.

Regarding hospitalizations, he said that 71 people are in hospital, 59 of whom are in the common room and 12 are in intensive care. Similarly, five people died of chikungunya, including three women and two men, were reported.
“Of the five fatalities, four were over the age of 60, and one was a 34-year-old with diabetes. On this point, I would like to emphasize that people arrive at the service severely dehydrated, especially those over 70. All Something is possible, but it is important to accompany them, urging them to drink water and not become dehydrated, in addition to the time for counseling, as this is essential,” he said.
