ProPublica journalist mocked for spreading ‘pathetic’ 20-year-old DeSantis gossip: ‘The walls are closing in’

ProPublica reporter Alec MacGillis was mocked on Twitter for noting there was a bit of a decades-old gossip about Governor Ron DeSantis, Republic of Florida, It was worrying.

On Saturday, McGillis published a lengthy report from the Financial Times by Joshua Chavin that called the Florida governor “the brainy and dramatic Donald Trump.” Within the comprehensive analysis on DeSantis, MacGillis highlighted a secondhand account of the governor as an undergraduate at Yale University and how he would leave dates due to their reaction to his pronunciation of the phrase “Thai food.”

Yikes: “According to a friend, DeSantis was telling dates he liked Thai food, but he pronounced it “thigh.” Finch wrote that if they corrected him, he would find an excuse to leave.

The story came from author Charles Finch’s epidemiological diary What Just Happened: Notes of a Long Year in which Finch recalled what he knew about DeSantis during their college days.

The comment was mocked along with the accusation on social media as a poor example of journalists’ curiosity and Attack on DeSantis.

Conservative commentator Chad Felix Green wrote on Twitter, “I mean. Biden got involved with segregationists and kept innocent men in jail to further her career, but that’s bad too. I think so.”

Red State managing editor Jennifer Van Laar wrote, “*This* what they throw at DeSantis? Pathetic. Also, no one wants a boyfriend or girlfriend to correct them, and if they do it on a first date, that’s a really bad sign.”

Stephen Miller, contributing editor at The Spectator, joked, “You’re supposed to save this stuff for a few years.

Journalist Mark Hyman quipped, “Where do they find such amazing journalists conducting such in-depth investigations on critical issues? @propublica should be very proud. Next: what Flavored ice cream that was eaten by the main. “

“Guys. I think the walls are getting close to DeSantis. They’ve finally got him cornered. I don’t think he’ll survive an investigative scandal by a British newspaper which revealed that, 25 years ago, when he was a student, he once said that Thai is the thigh.”

Mediaiate editor Caleb Howe tweeted: “THIS IS WHY PULITZERS.”

Despite numerous tweets criticizing him, McGillis has stuck to the tweet and found the claim about DeSantis to be “amazing”.

In response to one critic who wrote, “Damn you. You are one of the few true objective journalists who have remained as you pull and stand out. [hearsay] Quote from 20 years ago from “Friend”. disappointing.”

McGillis replied: “The point has been taken. But I trust both the quoted author and the Financial Times reporter enough to cite it. It’s a small but striking detail.”

A semi-accusation 2021 Politico report on DeSantis who appeared to attack him because of “scarred” former employees. Likewise, social media users described this story as a “success piece” based on weak accusations and second-hand accounts.
