Dengue cases in Rio de Janeiro state have increased by 300% this year, according to a survey by the state’s health department (SES). The comparison takes into account the months from January to October this year and the same period in 2021.

According to SES, the Information System for Notifiable Diseases (Snan) has already accounted for 10,471 cases of dengue fever this year, with 14 victims. Last year, 2,613 cases and four deaths from the disease were recorded as of October.

According to the survey, the incidence of chikungunya in the state has also increased, but to a lesser extent. Cases increased by 24%, with 611 cases diagnosed and no deaths in 2022.

They are considered urban arboviruses, and both diseases are transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, as well as Zika. This third disease, however, decreased the number of cases in 2022.

The wave of cases recorded this year can be explained in part by the return of serotype 2 of the dengue virus, which has not spread in the state of Rio de Janeiro since 2008.

The Minister of Health states that the serotype was responsible for the largest epidemic of dengue fever faced by the state of Rio de Janeiro in 2008, and its entry has been monitored again since 2019.

Who was born after that period [2008] He does not have immunity to this subtype of virus. Therefore, we have an important portion of the population that is susceptible, which could lead to increased transmission,” explains Shipp.

Dengue control depends on residents taking precautions in their homes and workplaces to prevent standing water from accumulating in places such as potted plants, tires, bottles, unused and unequipped swimming pools, exposed water tanks, and even small containers such as bottle caps.

To help residents prevent the accumulation of stagnant water in open spaces and eliminate mosquito infestations, the Ministry of Health recommends checking that the water tank is well covered; Leave trash containers well covered; Put sand in the plant dishes; Trash collection and bagging in the yard and cleaning out the gutters.

Swimming pools still need to be covered; cover drains and lower toilet lids; cleaning the outer drawer of the refrigerator; cleaning and storing pet dishes; clean the air conditioning water collection tray; Cover the cistern and other water tanks well.
