The best medium-sized airport in the country

Sacramento International Airport (SMF) was named the best mid-size airport in the nation according to the Wall Street Journal’s 2022 airport rankings. Compared to 50 other airports surveyed, SMF received the highest score overall.

The 50 busiest airports were surveyed and then divided into two sizes – 20 large and 30 medium. The airports were then measured on 19 categories including experience, from on-time performance and waiting security to customer satisfaction and ticket prices. The ratings are further grouped into three broad categories – reliability, comfort and value.

Ranked highest of all airports surveyed in the reliability category, SMF also ranked highly in arrival and departure times, low flight cancellations, taxi speed and security clearance times, and a maximum walking distance of just 1,213 feet.

“The SMF team continually provides our customers with a safe, comfortable and enjoyable travel experience,” said Cindy Nichol, director of the Sacramento County Airport Department. “It’s clear that living our values every day makes a difference, as we make our customers our number one priority. We see every day as an opportunity to improve and accomplish more together by collaborating; connecting and taking pride in what we do.”
