Sight Tech Global 2022 announced • TechCrunch

As we prepare for the third year Sight Tech Global (December 7-8, free and default, Register here), a tech event that tracks advances in technology to support people with blindness, there are two major shifts front and center.

First, new digital experiences, particularly virtual reality, test known methods of accessibility. There are no white sticks or screen readers (yet!) in the metaverse. This digital world is about to move into the mainstream for both consumers and organizations so quickly that an afterthought can easily be reached, as was the case at the beginning of the PV era.

At Sight Tech Global, we’ll hear from the people working to make sure the metaverse is open to everyone. The event is free and virtual!

Second, the technology platforms that underpin many of the breakthroughs in assistive technology and access—the tools that help blind and visually impaired people navigate the world—are rapidly advancing, enabling better and cheaper devices. Not so long ago, AI-powered computer vision systems were a costly marvel for miniature cameras, GPUs, and batteries, but faster networks, cloud services, and more powerful mobile phones are changing everything, especially the cost.

The age-old debate about accessibility technology has been the norm — global technology platforms such as mobile phones with built-in accessibility features, or devices specifically designed for people who need help with vision. The emerging formula is not one or the other but both, in a winning combination.

At Sight Tech Global, we’ll hear from technologists applying new approaches to next-generation devices. Register today.

Behind much of these discussions lies the development of AI itself, an important technology across the blind technology spectrum. The current “deep learning” form of AI continues to deliver amazing results in forms such as natural language GPT3 Or various computer vision AI systems. But there is growing dissatisfaction with the ability of these powerful pattern recognition systems to apply something like human thinking to issues big and small, not to mention filtering out bias and issues when unleashing AI.

At Sight Tech Global, we’ll hear from top AI tech experts grappling with these topics and more.

The event agenda will be ready in a month, but we hope you will Register today. The event is free and virtual.

And there’s a new twist in 2022: Sight Tech Global is adding an “in-person” event on December 9 in San Jose, California. The event is aimed at technologists, product leaders and designers working in access technology. The event is limited to 150 people and by invitation only. Most of the programs will be workshops led by attendees. Here is where you can request an invite or nominate someone.

Sight Tech Global is a production of a non-profit organization Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. We are grateful to our current sponsors APH, Amazon, Google, Fable, Humanware, LinkedIn, Microsoft and Waymo. If you want to sponsor the event, Please contact us. All sponsorship proceeds go to the nonprofit Vista Center, which has been serving the Silicon Valley area for 75 years.
