Sweden investigates Cryptosporidium outbreak – Outbreak News Today

Sweden’s public health agency, Folkhälsomyndigheten, has reported investigating an outbreak of Cryptosporidium parvum in the country.

An increase in the number of reported cases of cryptosporidiosis was seen in the first two weeks of October compared to the same period in previous years.

By typing (analysis of the parasite genome), 61 cases belonging to the Cryptosporidum parvum subtype IIaA15G2R1 were confirmed.

Among the confirmed cases, 41 are women and 20 are men. The cases ranged in age from 11 to 86 years, the average age was 44 years and originated from ten different regions of Sweden.

There are another 98 possible cases reported during the period, some of which may belong to the outbreak. Infected infection control units, the Swedish Food Agency and the Public Health Agency are investigating the outbreak to determine the source of the infection, which is suspected of being a widespread food in Sweden.
