Taiwan reports increase in paratyphoid fever cases in 2022

Yesterday, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a confirmed local case of paratyphoid fever in a 10-year-old girl living in the Northern District. Paratyphoid fever was confirmed on 25 November.

She has no recent travel history at home and abroad.

Family members and classmates who lived with him had no suspected symptoms.

According to the statistics of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of November 27 this year, there have been 6 confirmed cases of paratyphoid fever, all of which are local cases, between the ages of 10 and 40.

From 2018 to 2021, the cumulative number of local cases were 1, 3, 0 and 1.

Enteric salmonella Paratyphi A, Paratyphi B, and Paratyphi C serotypes cause a potentially serious and sometimes life-threatening bacterial illness referred to as paratyphoid fever.

Humans are the only source of these bacteria. No animal or ecological reservoirs have been identified.

Paratyphoid fever is transmitted through consumption of water or food contaminated with the faeces of a severely infected, convalescent, or chronic asymptomatic carrier.
