The Corolla Cross is ideal for young people on the go or older folks entering their retirement years who want reliable transportation to get around town.

household name

The Corolla name isn’t new. The Toyota Corolla is a compact sedan/hatchback that has served the company well for nearly four decades. Although its highest sales years were between 2003-2008 when it reached nearly 400,000 multiple times over, it is still a good product with sales of 248,993 one year prior.

The Cross has mechanical similarities to the Corolla sedan and hatchback. The interior is identical to the Corolla sedan. The Cross adds more versatility because it’s a small SUV that gives owners quite a few options.

The 2022 Corolla is $2,000 less than the Cross, starting at $20,425.

AT A GLANCE – 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross

fills the void

The Corolla Cross fills the gap between the compact and popular SUV Toyota RAV4. Cross comes in three trim levels (L, LE, XLE). Among its competitors is the Volkswagen Taos, Mazda CX-30 And the Chevrolet Trailblazer.

Performance isn’t a strong point of the standard front-wheel-drive Cross, which has the same engine as the Corolla. Acceleration is sluggish at times, and it’s no surprise that the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine makes 169 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. It goes from 0-60 mph in 9.5 seconds. It weighs between 3,125 and 3,325 pounds and has a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds.

We enjoyed the Cross’s handling, comfort and maneuverability. It provides a smooth and good ride around town, plus it’s easy to slip into tight parking spaces.

Standard driver safety features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control.

internal

The Cross Cabin is easy to recognize due to its functional design and easy to learn nuances. It offers a good mix of touch controls and buttons, which is something we prefer. The SUV comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, SiriusXM satellite radio, wireless smartphone charging, and rear-seat USB charging ports.

The front seats are cushioning and provide solid head and legroom. The rear seats are not comfortable and are a definite pressure to accommodate three people. However, having two people in the back is quite adequate.

The Corolla Cross offers ample rear cargo space of 25.2 cubic feet. The back seat drops down to accommodate larger items, but we didn’t like that it didn’t fold completely flat on the floor. Base cargo space is more than the Corolla hatchback.

away

Overall, there’s a lot to like about the new 2022 Toyota CorporationsFirst crossover. The compact crossover SUV gets good cargo space, clever cabin layout, gets excellent gas mileage, and a good ride.
