A British man has won a Fiat 500 after a mysterious phone call leads him to keys buried in a field.

The search was part of a treasure hunt conducted by Scrap Car Comparison, an online marketplace that matches owners of scrap and damage cars with companies that buy them for disposal.

The competition was built around the What3Words navigation system, which divided the entire world into three square meter squares, identified by three randomly generated words that create a unique, yet easy to remember address.

Manchester-area IT specialists Alex Rawson and Danny Lane teamed up to find out the answers as soon as they were posted at 9am on October 18, only to discover that the site they had discovered was 100 miles away in Henley-in-Arden, Warwickshire.

Thinking that they would never arrive in time, they decided to pass the details on to someone closer who could claim the prize.

A quick search led them to a lead candidate.

“We looked at the location on Google Maps and saw that there was a business nearby called RM Roofing. Since we work for a company called RM Education ourselves, this felt like fate,” Rawson said.

They called the number, to which Simon Muirhead, who needed some convincing that it wasn’t a joke, answered and finally decided to give it a shot.

Several hundred people correctly figured out the puzzles and a few of them reached the farm where Muirhead was sent. However, with Rawson and Lin’s help over the phone, he was the first to find the keys at 9:45 AM

“I can’t quite believe it. I was about to leave for work and got a call from an unknown number and then the next thing I know they are talking to me about how to find the keys to a brand new car. I almost lost it as people were showing up to try and find them, but I am so pleased Because I dug them before anyone else,” Muirhead said.

The moment he found them, we were partying together,” Rawson said.

“It was such a good feeling to spread some good luck and play a part in making someone’s day. We went over the moon to help someone get a brand new car!”
