Why Biden’s quiet campaign season could help Democrats in November
Charlotte, Nick – With Democrats and Republicans split evenly in the US Senate, The stakes are high for Senate races in the major elimination nations.
Former President Donald Trump He explicitly supports the candidates he prefers. But a big name doesn’t lean into these races very much; President Biden. why? This is likely due to Biden’s popularity.
For example, he’s unpopular in North Carolina, so it could play a role in why he’s not campaigning with the state’s Democratic candidate.
Just over two weeks into Election Day, polls are close in key Senate races in states like Nevada, Georgia, Pennsylvania and North Carolina.
“Things have gone downhill with them, we’re ahead, we’re up front,” President Biden said at a news conference Friday.
Biden is watching those races closely, but he doesn’t get himself directly involved in most of them.
“The president is welcome to North Carolina,” said Sherry Beasley, the Democrat running for the North Carolina Senate. “It’s great to come see the successes as well as the challenges we face.”
But a presidential visit may not be in Beasley’s best interest. Biden lost North Carolina to former President Trump in 2020.
“Sherry Beasley always finds a way to be super busy any time the Joe Biden administration comes to North Carolina,” said Beasley’s opponent. Trump-backed Representative Ted Budd.
Budd said that Paisley did not want to be associated publicly with Biden’s policies. But University of North Carolina political science professor Eric Heberlig said it’s likely something to do with optics.
“For Biden to visit here and for there to be pictures of Paisley and Biden together, it’s easy to be shown in TV ads for Budd, and that’s what Beasley is trying to prevent,” Heberlig said.
President Biden said he campaigned with 15 midterm candidates. He visited candidates in mostly blue states such as California, Oregon and Colorado. Then there is Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania isn’t reliably blue, but Biden was born there.
“So contacting the local boy is enough to offset any criticism people have of Biden’s performance as president,” Heberlig said.
Biden’s visit to Pennsylvania was mostly behind closed doors. He went to a private fundraiser for Senate candidate Jon Fetterman.
Biden visit Florida Next week for a fundraising rally with Democrats including Gov. candidate Charlie Crist. Heberlig said the visit is low-risk because Democrats are not expected to win there anyway.
“Even if a visit is unlikely to help Krist win Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida is likely to remain on the fairly competitive slate in 2024, so Biden has an incentive to give it some personal attention.”
